On Thursday, June 14th, Gateway businesses gathered at Rental Housing Alliance Oregon to celebrate a year of accomplishments with Commissioner Amanda Fritz.

Member business Atomic Auto sponsored the meeting, and owner Travis Decker welcomed attendees with a brief speech about the importance of being a part of the association. “Being a part of this association has allowed us as business owners to come to creative solutions together,” said Travis.

The meeting then began with a presentation led by Gateway Area Business Association board member Jason Nishikawa of Irvine and Co. CPAs. Jason recapped the past year of activities, which included a district clean-up, mixers and hosting all five city council members at membership luncheons.

Jason also previewed activities for the upcoming year. Among those is Cruising Gateway, a car, bicycle and skateboard cruise-in that showcases all the ways around Gateway. Advantage Gateway Funeral & Cremation Services will host a car cruise-in, Outer Rim Bicycle Shop will host a bicycle cruise-in and a skateboard cruise-in will take place at Gateway Discovery Park. Attendees can also participate in activities hosted by local business vendors.

Member businesses also learned that they’ll be receiving a new benefit for the upcoming year – professional photography! The association announced a professional photographer will be visiting members to capture 3 photographs that businesses can use in their own marketing.

Following the presentation, Hospitality Committee chair Karen Montez of KPM Business Services facilitated a discussion where attendees were asked “What would you like to celebrate as an association in one year?” Members vocalized that they wanted to celebrate another year of informative guest speakers and a coordinated approach to safety and livability issues.

Board elections were also on the agenda. The board elected the following slate:

  • Christopher Masciocchi of Masciocchi (new)
  • Karen Montez of KPM Business Services (returning)
  • Omar Obeid of Furniture Plus (new)
  • Eric Shoemaker of Swell Companies (new)

These board members will join those currently serving, including:

  • Travis Decker of Atomic Auto
  • Nidal Kahl of Kahl Properties
  • Jason Nishikawa of Irvine and Co. CPAs
  • Lisa Ortquist of Ortquist & Associates, PC

Finally, businesses welcomed Commissioner Amanda Fritz, the guest speaker at the meeting. Commissioner Amanda Fritz addressed a number of topics in her opening comments, including the need to protect parking as the Gateway Area continues to develop. The Commissioner also announced that the Portland Police Bureau currently has 14 vacancies, the lowest vacancy rate in years.
