June 18, 2008 Board Meeting Minutes
ATTENDANCE: PRESENT: Darl Stuvick, Fred Sanchez, Ed Dahm, AJ Prasad, Karen Montez, Lee Powell, Kevin Minkoff EXCUSED Alan Sanchez, Carl Stein ABSENT: Nancy Zuffrea
CALL TO ORDER: Vice President, AJ Prasad called the meeting to order. He thanked the Board for their generous volunteerism and enthusiasm. It was moved to accept the May 14, 2008 board minutes, seconded and approved unanimously. It was moved to accept the Treasurer’s report, seconded and approved unanimously.
GENERAL MEETING SPEAKERS:
July 10th: Political Debate featuring candidates for Portland City Countil Seat #1: Amanda Fritz and Charles Lewis at JJ Norths, NE 105th & Halsey Street
August: No General Meeting – Members are encouraged to attend GABA sponsored events: August 2nd, 10am to 5pm National Night Out Barbeque and Party
at Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes – 1825 NE 108th Ave
August 21 and 28: 6 to 8 pm FREE SUMMER CONCERTS
at Ventura Park, SE 117th & Stark Street
September 11th, 11:45 – 1pm General Meeting honoring local police and fire fighters
at 111th SQUARE under the flag, NE 111th & Halsey Street. The Board agreed to authorize Fred to purchase trophies and/or awards for those being honored. Karen will help Fred develop a flyer for the September 11th event.
October 9th, 11:45 to 1pm - Political Debate featuring candidates for Multnomah County Commissioner District 3: Mike Delman and Judy Shiprack
CHANGE IN VENUE for GABA General Meetings: There was discussion about changing the venue of the GABA general meetings. Kevin and AJ will talk to JJ North’s and look at several other places and report at the July Board meeting.
FUN-O-RAMA EVENTS:
PUBLICITY: Lee suggested having GABA purchase A-Frames to advertise their general meetings. Discussion centered around ordering from GABA members when possible and Lee agreed to be responsible for setting up and maintaining the signs. It was moved, seconded and approved unanimously to have Lee purchase the A-Frames.
GOLF-O-RAMA: Karen and AJ reported that the Golf-O-Rama was able to pay for itself, with some funds remaining for a scholarship. Next year they hope to have more sponsors. Kevin offered to head up the golf tournament in 2009.
PARADE: Ed reported that the Parade again surpassed previous years with more participants.
RAFFLE: In Nancy’s absence, several board members praised the number of raffle prizes this year and were concerned about number of tickets sold and distribution of prizes.
FAIR: There was discussion about balancing the speaker system and having more activities for children, such as a dunk tank. Large numbers come to the fair, but don’t stay long, perhaps this year because of the heat. Darl was concerned about traffic back up at the Y of 111th & 110th and recommend no parking on one side of each street.
KEYSTONE KOPS: Kevin announced that he would hold a meeting for the Keystone Kops on the 4th Thursday of each month. They will form a barbershop quartet to use as a fund-raiser as well as other ways of obtaining money.
The meeting was adjourned at 12 noon.
